Cubs AAA prospect Javier Baez is being called up as the club heads to Colorado. Business as usual right? Not so fast. This really makes no sense for a 2014 season that is yet another one for “growing pains”. Unless of course, you had another plan. What could that be?
It could be as simple as Baez getting to the top of his “learning arc” and not having anything left to prove in AAA. He has been in the Cubs system for 4 seasons now. However, he had a couple injury setbacks and switched over from Shortstop to Second Base. So, he probably could use a little more time there.
This leads me to believe the Cubs might be making another move, such as making a waiver deal to move veteran Third Baseman Luis Valbuena. Valbuena is a solid glove at the position and comes through with some clutch hits at times. Baez has no experience at 3B but perhaps SS Starlin Castro could play there, opening up Shortstop for Baez.
They could also simply want and extended look at the prospect so they can figure out if they want to trade him or Castro this offseason for some much needed pitching.
