That’s right. I was one of the few people saying this when he was first called up. His bat and plate approach are too good. Playing catcher is great. He could probably have a solid 8-10 year career there. With a bat like his, wouldn’t you want him to have a shot at a 12+ year career?
I know I would. Look, I know it’s real early and the kid possesses the desire to learn, work hard, and ultimately be great. Let’s not shorten his career by keeping him behind the plate, is all I’m saying.
Personally, I would like to see Schwarber, Rizzo, and Bryant in the lineup for the next 6-8 years and be able to see what they can accomplish. Not sure if they can pull off what Toews, Kane, and Jossa did in their sport, but it will be fun to see it unfold.
I’m hoping that Theo and Jed are looking long-term and realize that catchers ultimately break down. Maybe he doesn’t have to make the switch right away. Perhaps he can catch for 2-3 years. I just wouldn’t risk the wear and tear on his knees. He’s probably best suited for first base, which Rizzo has that locked up. Either put him in left or move Rizzo to left in the offseason.
